It is with much sadness, but also celebration and joy, that we announce the peaceful passing of Susan (Doell) Winther, age 93, of Steinbach, Manitoba on Saturday, June 27, 2026, surrounded by her loving husband, Ernie, and her extended family.
Susan was born on March 13, 1933, in Horndean, Manitoba - a daughter to the late Henry and Anna Doell, and a sister to the late Henry (Tina) Doell and late Annie (Anton) Dyck. She is survived and remembered by her dear husband, Ernie Winther; many precious nieces and nephews; a multitude of dear friends; and those who became adopted family.
After graduating from Winkler Collegiate, she chose teaching as her career because she loved children and thus, she became a permit teacher. She taught for nine years in a one-room rural school in Pinewood followed by 20 years in Ste. Anne Junior High after receiving her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Manitoba.
Early in her career she was introduced to a handsome bachelor, and they were married on October 8, 1955, enjoying 70 wonderful years of marriage. They settled in Ostenfeld on Ernie‘s family homestead. After her retirement from teaching in June of 1988, she and Ernie travelled and eventually became snowbirds, wintering in Clearwater, Florida. In 2006 Ernie and Susan settled in Steinbach, where they had many enjoyable visits with family and friends.
Susan served God with joy, devotion, and love in her church, her community, and in her home. Susan was involved in many ministries, serving as an Awana leader for 25 years, teaching Sunday school, volunteering at the MCC for 11 years, and just generally loving people! She served joyfully in every aspect of her life. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed!
A special thank you for the loving care provided by Janice and her team from Safety Nest, the many meals and visits from family, friends, and neighbors, along with the ‘Winther’s Rock Support Group.’
In Susan‘s own words:
“My life has been a wonderful journey… the best is yet to come, and that is HEAVEN!”
The memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel Co-op, Steinbach, MB.
